The Ohio State Buckeyes were incredibly active in the transfer portal this offseason. That includes noteworthy acquisitions such as All-American safety Caleb Downs ( Alabama ) and quarterback Will Howard (Kansas State). One move that did not come with as much positivity was when former Alabama center Seth McLaughlin opted for the Buckeyes.

That move was left with ridicule and jokes across X users. Most people remembered McLaughlin’s rough performance in the playoffs. It appeared like he forgot how to snap the football, which isn’t the most ideal thing for a center. That was one of the most bizarre storylines of the playoffs, and something that left fans generally underwhelmed by that pickup.

So far this season, McLaughlin has been a revelation. The Buckeye offensive line has been wildly inconsistent the last couple of years, especially in 2023. The former Alabama standout has brought stability to the table, and been a leader up from that Justin Frye and the unit has needed.

McLaughlin has also seen several of his teammates take massive steps forward this season as well. Left guard Donovan Jackson has been playing his best football, which no doubt is buoyed by the play of McLaughlin. Left tackle Josh Simmons has also been tremendous, now being projected by various NFL Draft analysts to be selected in the first round this April.

While he might not be the flashiest member of the group, there’s an argument to be made that McLaughlin might be the most important. The 6-4, 305-pound offensive lineman is the main communicator of the group, and a steadying force. His impact can’t be understated.

It’s unclear how the NFL sees McLaughlin, carrying several late round draft grades coming into the season. There is a great chance that McLaughlin could be a riser during the draft process. For now, he has already exceeded his expectations since arriving in Columbus. McLaughlin has been tremendous.
