Florida HC Billy Napier explains controversial decision at the end of the Gators' loss to the Tennessee Vols

The Tennessee Vols left Neyland Stadium on Saturday night with a 23-17 win against the Florida Gators.

The game went to overtime after Florida scored a late touchdown to cut the Tennessee lead to 17-16. For a moment, it looked like the Gators were going to go for two after the touchdown, which would've eliminated the possibility of overtime.

Florida lined up to go for two, but they changed their mind after the Vols called a timeout after getting a look at the Gators' alignment.

After the game, Florida head coach Billy Napier explained why he changed his mind.

"We had a play that we felt good about and then obviously they burned their timeout," said Napier. "I think we felt from the three (yard line) there, we were playing pretty good on both sides of our team at that point in time so we felt like let's go play overtime. Let's go give our guys a chance to play some more plays. I thought defensively, we kept ourselves in it. Wasn't quite ready to do that at that point in time."

That's a decision that Napier probably regrets in hindsight (even if he doesn't admit it). Traditionally, at least in basketball, it's accepted that you go for the win on the road and you play for overtime at home.

Florida played for overtime on the road instead of trying to win the game against a Tennessee defense that had just given up a late touchdown. The Gators had the momentum at that point and they could've stole a win in Knoxville. But instead, Napier decided to extend the game.

Once Tennessee won the coin toss going into overtime, it gave the momentum right back to the Vols. Tennessee's defense had an incredible series in overtime, forcing a long field goal attempt from the Gators (which was missed) before putting the game away via a Dylan Sampson touchdown run.

Late game decisions continue to haunt SEC coaches. Tennessee, however, is just happy they were on the right side of this bad decision.

I don’t think Florida had any intention of going for two. That gimmick lineup was designed to get Tennessee to burn one of their timeouts before they kicked off.
