Notre Dame head football coach Marcus Freeman was available to speak to the media on Monday. That conversation consisted of recapping their victory over Stanford, previewing their matchup against Georgia Tech, and discussing injuries. Coach Freeman spoke about a brutal loss the team suffered with All-American cornerback Benjamin Morrison being lost for the remainder of the 2024 season.

Morrison injured his hip against Stanford, and it will require surgery. This is a disastrous loss for the Irish, who have already been dealing with a long list of injuries this season. If you asked who the best overall player is on the roster, Morrison would be on the very short list.

A three-year difference maker for Notre Dame, Morrison made his impact felt immediately as a true freshman in 2022. During the course of his career, Morrison has played in 31 games for the Irish. He has recorded 84 total tackles, five tackles for loss, nine interceptions, and 18 pass breakups. Morrison has been named an All-American in each of the last two seasons.

After this injury, Morrison is going to have a fascinating decision in front of him concerning the 2025 NFL Draft. Largely projected as a potential first round pick this April, having hip surgery does make his process a bit tricky. As long as he medically checks out, it shouldn’t hurt a ton but obviously there are a lot of unknown variables to consider.

Notre Dame will now turn to true freshman Leonard Moore, who has already had some time filling in due to injuries on the back end. You can also expect fellow freshman Karson Hobbs to get an expanded role in the secondary, and Jordan Clark must be ready to flex back outside if the need arises. All hands will have to be on deck just in case to cushion the blow.
