There's a specific play that the Alabama Crimson Tide are expecting to see from the Tennessee Vols when the two programs meet in Knoxville on Saturday afternoon.

The last two weeks, Alabama has struggled to stop inside shovel passes. It was an issue in the Crimson Tide's loss to Vanderbilt and it was an issue in their narrow win against South Carolina.

Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack told reporters on Monday that the shovel pass is a "challenging play" to defend up front. And he expects that teams will continue to run it against them until the Tide show they can stop it.

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer echoed those sentiments on Monday when asked about the shovel pass.

"No question and it's going to get thrown at you different ways," said DeBoer when asked if he expects to continue seeing the shovel pass. "The personnel or the formations that people line up in, you're going to try to find, from an offensive standpoint, putting those shoes on and just trying to understand what that's going to look like in their scheme. And so it's going to be presented in a different way."

Tennessee ran a shovel pass to perfection in their win against Alabama in 2022, picking up a key two point conversion in the fourth quarter.

Tennessee also executed a shovel pass in a third-and-12 situation against NC State earlier this season.

The shovel pass is definitely a play that's in the Vols' offensive arsenal, so I'd certainly expect to see it at some point against Alabama on Saturday night.
