Texas HC Steve Sarkisian swats away Billy Bowman’s comment as Longhorns done with Oklahoma, on to Georgia

Texas players were likely amused by Oklahoma safety Billy Bowman Jr.’s comment in the post-game press conference Saturday.

Bowman said the Sooners just “gift-wrapped them opportunities” in Texas’ 34-3 victory at the Cotton Bowl.

“We just gave it to them,” Bowman said. “As a defense, we’re better than that. End of story. We gave it to them. They didn’t earn what they got shortly after that interception.”

Asked about whether Texas earned it Saturday, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian hit back hard Monday.

“Not my problem. We won. Next game,” Sarkisian said.

Sarkisian wasn’t going to linger. He’s got bigger fish to fry. The top-ranked Longhorns (6-0, 2-0 SEC) are already moving on to this week’s matchup against fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (5-1, 3-1).

“All in all, it was a good win for us, happy for the guys,” Sarkisian said. “You know, it’s always a great moment when you can bring the Golden Hat (Trophy) home. But as I said, Saturday is more work to do, and we’ve got a heck of a challenge this weekend against Georgia.

“Very good football team. Have a ton of respect for Coach (Kirby) Smart and the job that he’s done at Georgia. They’ve kind of somewhat been the standard of college football here now for the last, oh, 6-7 years. I think they’ve been to seven SEC championship games. They won three in a row. Back-to-back national champs, competed for a third, so they’ve recruited well. They've got great schemes and are really well coached.”

The Longhorns start the week as 3.5-point favorites in the matchup at Royal-Memorial Stadium. They’re not thinking about the Sooners anymore, either.

It’ll be the first time Texas and Georgia have met since the 2019 Sugar Bowl at the end of the 2018 season. The Horns won 28-21.

“I was there for the Sugar Bowl,” UT safety Michael Taaffe said. “Sam (Ehlinger), I think, had three rushing touchdowns, put the team on his back like he does. He’s a leader, and that was so fun to be there, be with his family, and see how it all went down.”
