Notre Dame QB recruiting took a long and winding road, but ended up with a “dream scenario” landing Blake Hebert

Following the fallout from the Deuce Knight flip to Auburn, Notre Dame football was pressed with doing something that they hadn’t done in over a year, finding their 2025 quarterback recruit. They did that on Monday by flipping Greenwich (Conn.) Brunswick School quarterback Blake Hebert from his commitment to the Clemson Tigers.

For those who don’t follow recruiting closely, or at least haven’t since Knight originally committed in September of 2023, Hebert was actually a player that was on the Notre Dame radar very early on. The 6-3, 215-pound passer had his fans around the Irish staff, but when Hebert committed to Clemson in June of last year, they were forced to focus on the other options more closely.

Hebert’s name resurfacing was a surprise for those who cover Notre Dame recruiting, but when you peel back the curtain, it wasn’t overly shocking with the staff’s known affinity for him. According to a source around the program, they are very fortunate to have landed a talented quarterback of this caliber.

“I think we caught everyone off guard,” the source said. “Live arm and really, really good athlete too. Got some things to clean up like any high school quarterback, but if it weren’t for the junior year injury, we might be talking about a borderline top 100 guy right now.

“He’s kind of the forgotten quarterback in the class with how quiet everything was after his commitment,” they continued. “But we’ve watched a million quarterbacks since the Deuce saga began and this feels like the dream come true scenario. Think he’s easily one of the best ten or so quarterbacks in the class.”

Before the injury as a junior, multiple recruiting platforms had Hebert ranked among the top 70 overall players nationally. Missing that time caused a dip but both ESPN and Rivals still have Hebert ranked as a four-star prospect in the 2025 recruiting class. ESPN has him pegged as the No. 6 quarterback in the class.

Hebert is off to a fast start in 2024, now playing for Brunswick School, which is also the home to fellow 2025 Irish commits Matty Augustine and Ethan Long. Through five games, Herbert has accounted for 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns. He is making plays with both his arm, and his legs so far.

While Hebert is not the talent of Knight, it was an impressive recovery from the Notre Dame staff just two months from national signing day. It may have been a long and winding road, but finishing this way was about as good as you could have hoped for as an Irish fan. Getting a quarterback this talented, and flipping him from a school like Clemson, is a massive victory.

“In the end, it all worked out though. We got our guy from the beginning so definitely no complaints here.”
