Indianapolis Colts coach compares a young defensive player to an NFL pro bowler from his past

The Indianapolis Colts seem to have found a real diamond in the rough in cornerback Samuel Womack III , who they claimed off of waivers following roster cutdown day.

And Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley sees a lot of a former Pro Bowl player he has coached in the past in Womack.

Here is the full answer Colts DC Gus Bradley gave, in which he compared Samuel Womack III to veteran Casey Hayward, whom he has coached at multiple spots in the past.

"He's got really good instincts. Sam kinda reminds me of a Casey Hayward. We had him back on the Chargers and Raiders. Very football savvy, very smart, high football IQ. Studies WRs, studies routes, things like that. He's got some speed too. Ever since he's come in here, you've seen him get his hands on the ball and get some PBUs. Its good to see that carry over to some of the games. But he plays with a lot of confidence."

Hayward last played in the NFL in 2022 with the Atlanta Falcons. He had an 11-year NFL career, during which time he played for four different franchises. He played under Bradley as his DC for the Los Angeles Chargers from 2017 to 2020 and again with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021.

Hayward was named to the NFL Pro Bowl twice during his career. One of which came in 2017 with Bradley as his DC. For Womack to be compared to a player that Bradley coached for five total seasons and obviously holds in high regard is a major compliment for the young CB, especially with him only joining the Colts just ahead of the regular season after the roster cutdown. Womack's play on the field is turning heads, but Bradley also seems impressed with what he's seen off the field and in the meeting rooms. It would be an understatement to say it's been a fantastic start for Womack in Indianapolis.
