Colorado star Travis Hunter bashes Ashton Jeanty's Heisman Trophy case in favor of his own

Although Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty is on pace to break Barry Sanders' single-season rushing marks, Colorado star Travis Hunter isn't impressed. In fact, the two-way playmaker and consensus elite 2025 NFL Draft prospect went even further when comparing the two's Heisman Trophy case.

Hunter and Jeanty lead Heisman Trophy odds through seven weeks, and both are worthy recipients. It's actually a shame that neither of them won't win, or that either of them played in a year with a weaker top candidate. But Hunter's comments on Jeanty's case for the Heisman are shocking.

On a recent episode of Robert Griffin III's Outta Pocket with RGIII podcast, Hunter said his path to the Heisman is clearly better.

“I know I can win it, but I don’t know who’s there,” Hunter said. “I mean y’all see Ashton Jeanty, it’s not like we haven’t seen a running back that’s good. We haven’t seen a player that plays both ways and I’m gonna keep saying that."

Hunter then oddly compared his production, which is good but not elite, to Jeanty's record-breaking pace.

"He has, I think, 95 carries for 1,000 yards. If I had 95 catches, how much yards you think I’d have? If I had 95 targets on defense what you think I’d have? If I had 95 catches on offense, what do you think I’d have?” Hunter asked.

“So I try to tell you, he’s got double the touches I’ve got on the offensive side of the ball and I still have defensive stats that’s still crazy and we’re only in Week 6,” Hunter said. “So I’m not gonna argue about it.”

Jeanty is currently dominating college football, amassing an incredible 1,248 rushing yards and securing 17 touchdowns on the run this season.

These remarkable statistics set a new standard for a running back, especially considering they've been achieved in just the first six games of the season.

In the same period, Hunter has been a key player, participating in 322 offensive snaps and 341 defensive ones. He tops the Big 12 with 49 catches, leads his team with 587 receiving yards, and has scored six touchdowns as a wide receiver.

Additionally, he's earned recognition as one of the nation's premier cornerbacks, recording 16 tackles, three pass deflections, two interceptions, and making a pivotal forced fumble in overtime that led to a victory against the Baylor Bears.

Personally, I think Jeanty has made the better case thus far. Hunter is awesome, but his greatest claim to the award so far is his incredible work ethic, toughness, and durability. His talent is fantastic, but his production is not near Jeanty's just yet.
