Deebo Samuel headlines long list of 49ers concerns on first injury report for rematch with Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs head into Sunday's rematch of Super Bowl 58 in a good spot in terms of health. It's tough to say the same for the San Francisco 49ers.

While defensive tackle Mike Danna was the lone player on the Chiefs' 53-man roster on Wednesday's injury report , the 49ers have a much longer list of concerns, one that is headlined by wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

Samuel, head coach Kyle Shanahan said, will be limited in practice with a wrist injury.

The 2021 first-team All-Pro did appear to be struggling with an arm injury during last Thursday's win over the Seattle Seahawks , Samuel saying afterward that took a hit to his humerus.

Still, the fact Samuel will be involved in some capacity points to it not being a serious issue, and there were more positive signs for two other players injured in that game.

Running back Jordan Mason suffered an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder and sat out most of the second half against Seattle. He is also projected to be limited, as is rookie safety Malik Mustapha, who snagged his first career interception before leaving the game with a low ankle sprain.

Defensive tackle Jordan Elliott appears on the right track to return after missing the last two games with a knee injury. He was predicted to be limited, that news particularly significant amid more injury issues on the interior defensive line, an area where the 49ers are very short on depth.

Shanahan said Maliek Collins, the 49ers' primary force on the interior following the loss of Javon Hargrave to a season-ending triceps injury, would miss practice with a knee injury.

Both healthy, Collins and Elliott would be the starters on the interior. With Kevin Givens and Kalia Davis the only other defensive tackles on the roster, the absence of Collins would again force the Niners to elevate a player at the position from the practice squad. Rookie Evan Anderson has already been elevated twice while veteran T.Y. McGill has been brought up once.

A similarly significant concern is a hip injury to wide receiver Jauan Jennings that was projected to keep him out of practice. While the 49ers are not short of talent at receiver and finally opened rookie first-round pick Ricky Pearsall's practice window this week, the loss of Jennings and his big-play ability in clutch situations would be huge for the 49er offense. Jennings threw a touchdown pass and caught another in the Super Bowl 58 defeat to the Chiefs and leads the 49ers in receiving yards this season.

Neither of the 49ers' kickers, Matthew Wright and Jake Moody, were expected to be involved in practice. Moody's return date from a high ankle sprain is unknown and the 49ers will need to elevate the newly signed Anders Carlson from the practice squad if Wright is not healthy enough to kick.

Veteran edge rusher Leonard Floyd was given a day off.
