Ohio State star receiver earns massive recognition as one of the nation's most outstanding playmakers

As the 2024 season reaches its midpoint, the Ohio State Buckeyes hold a 5-1 record after losing a close game by a point against Oregon. Currently, the team is enjoying its second week off to prepare for Nebraska’s visit to the Horseshoe.

Each year, the Biletnikoff Award is given to the nation’s top receiver, and at the start of the season, 49 pass-catchers were recognized, including six stars from the Big Ten.

Recently, Ohio State’s freshman sensation Jeremiah Smith was added to this elite list, joining fellow Buckeye Emeka Egbuka.

It's no surprise that the leading receiver in the Buckeyes' offense would be honored with this recognition. Smith has quickly adapted to college football and has significantly impacted all six games so far.

He has scored a touchdown in each of his first six games. Here's a breakdown of his performance game by game.

    • Six catches, 92 yards, two touchdowns vs Akron
    • Five catches, 199 yards, one touchdown vs Western Michigan
    • Three catches, 70 yards, one touchdown vs Marshall
    • Five catches, 83 yards, one touchdown at Michigan State
    • Four catches, 89 yards, one touchdown vs Iowa
    • Nine catches, 100 yards, one touchdown at Oregon

With 553 receiving yards, Smith ranks second in the Big Ten, trailing Tai Felton’s 719. His seven touchdowns are second, just behind Washington's Denzel Boston, who has nine (unrelated to Ohio State great David Boston).

At only 18 years old, Smith plays like an experienced third-year receiver. He shows exceptional route-running skills coupled with impressive strength and body control. While it may sound cliché, Smith really does turn 50-50 balls into 80-20 opportunities in his favor.

It’s clear he’s set to exceed even the highest expectations this season. If he continues on this trajectory, he could finish with 64 receptions, 1,106 yards, and 14 touchdowns over a 12-game season.

Factor in a possible Big Ten Championship Game and some postseason play, and Smith might not only have an outstanding freshman year but also one of the best seasons for any receiver in Ohio State history.
