American Bully Dogs are a controversial breed and are even banned in some states and countries. They are also sometimes confused with Pitbull Terriers, but the breeds are different. American Bullies have stocky bodies and broad heads, and while they may look imposing, their personalities vary as much as any other dog breed’s.

The American Bully dog has an average lifespan of anywhere from 10 to 14 years. However, some owners report their American Bullies living to 16 or even 18! American Bullies have some common health issues that may affect their longevity.

Hip and Elbow Dysplasia: These dogs have a broad, stocky frame that makes them more prone to this condition where joints don’t fit properly, leading to loss of movement and pain.

Skin Conditions: Bully breeds may develop dermatitis, a condition with red, itchy patches. They also can get hotspots, which are irritated areas of the skin.

Heart Disease: Bully dogs may be genetically more vulnerable to heart problems.

Eye Conditions: The breed is more likely to develop cataracts and other eye problems than some other breeds.

    Keeping American Bullies Healthy

Obesity is a common problem that affects these dogs, which leads to all sorts of health conditions. Keep them healthy and provide them with enough exercise. American Bullies tend to enjoy fetch, tug-of-war, and playing with a spring pole, which is a stick or pole with a toy hanging from it. When walking this breed, be careful since the breed’s shorter muzzle can make it hard for them to breathe in extreme temperatures or if they are overexerting themselves.

What Should an American Bully Eat?

Like every dog, this breed needs good nutrition to stay healthy. Choose quality dog foods with good amounts of protein and vitamins. Feed your dog based on their weight and age, and be careful that you don’t overfeed. Take your dog to the veterinarian regularly to keep them in tip-top shape so they can live a long, happy life.
