PERMIAN BASIN (KMID/KPEJ) – With one day left to cast your ballot early, people in Midland are voting to fill in some big shoes.

Four candidates are looking to fill the seats of late City Council Member Dan Corrales, who died unexpectedly in January.

The City of Midland said Texas Law requires a governing body to hold a special election within 120 days of a vacancy.

Now, Midlanders will be deciding between five people who should take the seat. Those five are Cheston Blank, John Burkholder, Eric Davidson, James R. “Bull” Henry, and Ben Roberts.

There are multiple places to cast your early vote on Tuesday, all of which will be open from 8am to 5pm:

    • Midland County Annex Building
    • Centennial Library
    • Midland Drive United Supermarket
    • Cogdell Learning Center
    • Manor Park

The same locations will be open for voting on Election Day, which is Saturday, May 4.

As of Monday, April 29, more than 1,600 people have made it to those locations to cast their early votes. Meanwhile, 162 people mailed in their ballots. Those add up to a total of 1,815 votes for Midland County.

Tuesday also marks the end of early voting in Big Spring, with several school issues on the ballot.

This includes two propositions for people across Howard County:

    • Proposition A would issue more than $216 million to the district for school facilities. The District said this is a property tax increase as taxes will be levied to pay for the principal and the interest on the bond.
    • Proposition B would issue $2.3 million to the district, which would go toward Memorial Stadium. The District said the money would be used on new ball field lighting and an eight-lane track for students to use.

Voting is open from 7am to 7pm on Tuesday at the Election Center in Big Spring, located at 2006 FM 700.

The Howard County Election Office said it’s important to note that there is not voting held at any courthouse in Howard County.

Also, in Forsan, which is in Howard County, there is a race for Mayor.

Benny Pickett is running against Robert Carey for the seat. This comes after Stan Park, the incumbent Mayor, decided to step down.
