MISD responds to calls for investigation into ‘Third Future Schools’

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Midland ISD is responding to recent calls for an investigation into charter school network, “Third Future Schools.”

Texas State Representative Ana Hernandez is calling for the investigation after a recent report alleged the company was diverting millions in taxpayer money out of Texas schools to help fund schools in other states, allegedly under the direction of former CEO Mike Miles.

Miles was later appointed to serve as Houston ISD’s Superintendent, following a state takeover of the district.

Third Future Schools operated Sam Houston Preparatory Elementary School in the 2020-2021 school year, before operating Lamar Elementary School this past year with current plans to maintain that relationship.

In a release on Friday, Midland ISD said, “Should TEA elect to conduct an investigation, MISD will provide the requested information and documentation and cooperate fully. MISD has been in communication with TFS and has been assured that funds for students served in Texas have not been used for schools in other states where they operate.”

“In the upcoming years, as contracts with Third Future Schools in Midland ISD expire, as with any other partnership agreement, the District will evaluate the renewal of these based on the effectiveness of the school along with the track record of successful student outcomes and the state accountability system,” MISD continued in the release.

Third Future also operates Ector College Prep in Odessa, another school alleged in the recent Spectrum News report to have had money taken out of its budget and diverted to Colorado.
