MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ): On Monday, August 26, the Midland Police Department, SWAT, and negotiator teams responded to the 3600 Block of Shell Avenue after a wanted man, later identified as 55-year-old Randall David Sperry barricaded himself inside his home after police issued a warrant for his arrest.
According to MPD arrest reports, Sperry was arrested and charged with credit/debit card theft and fraudulent use after a months-long investigation discovered Sperry had unlawfully spent more than $30,000 using an elderly family member’s information.
According to officials, the case began in early April after Sperry’s 73-year-old mother filed an identity theft and debit credit card abuse report. According to the report, Sperry’s mother told officials that her cards had declined and was notified that they had been canceled because she had multiple unpaid credit cards from a company she does not use.
Officials reported that Sperry’s mother was also told by her bank that the linked and unpaid credit cards had been addressed to a house on Shell Avenue- her son’s home.
MPD reported that upon investigation, detectives discovered that the unauthorized cards with unpaid expenses had the accurate owner’s name, date of birth, and social security number, but the address, phone number, and email information belonged to Sperry.
Reports showed that after requesting bank statements from January 2023 through February 2024, detectives discovered that the thefts had been going on longer than expected.
According to MPD, the unauthorized purchases made from November 2021 through April 2024, included thousands of dollars worth of vet bills, Only Fans, Vivint home security, phone payments, Game memberships, PayPal credit transactions, etc. without the knowledge or permission of his elderly mother.
According to the information gathered by detectives, a total of $38,303.70 was unlawfully spent by Sperry, who was arrested and charged with theft of more than $30,000, credit/debit fraudulent use, possession of identifying information, and resisting arrest on Monday, August 26, following MPD and SWAT team negotiations after he had barricaded himself inside his home on Shell Avenue.
