MCCAMEY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – The Midland Police Department and the Upton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a cluster bomb scare in McCamey earlier this week.

According to a release by the City of Midland, at about 9:48am on Monday, September 9, MPD received a request for help from Upton County Sheriff Sara Brown, who was heading to the 300 block of South Crockett, located two blocks from a school, responding to a believed cluster bomb munition.

Officials with MPD also reached out to Dyess Air Force Base Explosive Ordnance Disposal in Abilene. Officials with Dyess said it did not look like a military munition and were going to start their deployment request process. Local officials responded and set up a perimeter.

“Before the team arrived on scene, Dyess called and said that they believed it was a second stage hydraulic cement collar used to seal a bore hole. They gave us guidance on what we should see on the X-ray of the item to help make the determination.  Kyle and Micheal went down range for X-rays at approximately 1:08 p.m.” MPD said.

X-rays determined that there was no threat and it was determined to be an oilfield tool.
