WATCH: ‘Galaxy Gas’ trend resurges amidst warning from experts

(KMID/KPEJ) – Whippets, or the use of nitrous oxide to get a high, has been happening for decades, but it recently made a resurgence among teens through social media.

It started on TikTok when a man in a fast food establishment took a hit from a flavored whipped cream canister called “Galaxy Gas,” before showing off his deep voice and racking up millions of views and shares. Other people were quick to follow.

Now, when you search “Galaxy Gas” on TikTok, a warning pops up, saying some substances can be dangerous when misused. TikTok has also scrubbed a lot of controversial viral clips.

The “Galaxy Gas” website has also issued a disclosure you must agree to before scrolling. They issued a statement saying their products are for culinary food use only, and misuse of any kind is prohibited.

Nitrous oxide is laughing gas, so dentists and surgeons use it for procedures, but doctors say it’s just not safe for teens to use without medical assistance, because it could be deadly.

“These children have underdeveloped brains. They’re getting instant gratification high, and there’s no oversight…you can die from one use of this, one prolonged, abnormal, wrong misuse, no supervision, you can die,” said Dr. Sulagna, the founding physician at Misra Wellness.

A U.S. substance abuse study from a few years ago said around 13 million Americans ages 12 and older had misused nitrous oxide in their lifetime. Dr. Misra said it’s all about reminding teens that the short-term high isn’t worth the potential long-term brain damage.
