DPS raising money for family of critically injured trooper following Ector Co crash

ECTOR COUNTY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – The Texas Department of Public Safety has released more information about the trooper who was seriously injured while working at a crash early Tuesday morning.

According to DPS, Kevin Ramirez Vasquez, a U.S. Army veteran and recent graduate of DPS class A-23, was working on the crash in the westbound lanes of Highway 302, when a vehicle struck an Ector County Sheriff’s Office vehicle, critically injuring Vasquez, who was outside the vehicle.

Trooper Vasquez was flown to a hospital in Lubbock and is in critical condition. ECSO Deputy Justin Toombs, who was in the vehicle at the time was injured as well.

The DPS Troopers Foundation is now raising money for the Vasquez family through Help-A-Hero. A fee is charged up front, with 100 percent of donations going toward the family.
