ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Non-profit leaders across Odessa gathered Wednesday for the Junior League’s Community Impact Coalition meeting, with the biggest topic covered being addressing homelessness in Odessa.

The League’s Zassar Gatson said she learned the problem partially consists of people relocating to the Basin for work.

“It’s okay to come somewhere and stay in a hotel for a couple of days,” she said. “But then when they start seeking a permanent residence, they’re probably amazed at the cost. And so, a lot of people are living in their cars.”

Gatson told us that when people become homeless, they might need to seek other resources, such as food, hygiene, medical care and/or transportation. Craig Stoker, the Executive Director for Meals on Wheels Odessa, said being homeless might impact the food one can buy, and especially their health.

“When you look at foods available that are ready to eat, you’re going to find a lot of processed food, high in salt, high in fat, high in preservatives,” he said. “You don’t find fresh food locally at the dollar store.”

Gaston said those experiencing homelessness should continue to seek resources and ask questions until their needs are met.

“If one organization can’t meet the need, or they may meet one need, but they have multiple needs, then they can actually give them some direction as to where to go.”

Regular citizens can help the homeless have better food options by donating or volunteering at their local food bank or soup kitchen. The League is expected to hold its next meeting sometime in 2025.
