ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- Big Brother, Big Sister Permian Basin is a non-profit impacting the lives of children in the Tall City.

“Big brothers, Big sisters is a mentoring organization. Our purpose nationwide is to match one volunteer with one child to just help support the child be a friend, be confidant, be a cheerleader help guide that child as they progress to help that child become the best child that they can be” said, Kay Crites the Interim Director.

Mentorship changes the trajectory of children’s lives for the better.

“Studies have shown that children that grow up with mentors in their lives are less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, they are less likely to resort to violence, they are more likely to continue their education, and they are more likely to become a great member of our community–its cliché to say but the children are our future,” said Crites.

If you know a child who could benefit from the program joining Big Brother Big Sister, it is easy to get involved.

“One of them is a parent brings them in and signs up. And then the other schoolteacher or a counselor so they will recommend them and then we send the paperwork home, and as long as the parent signs for them to participate then they are a part of the program,” said Crites.
