MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Tuesday evening, a memorial service was held to honor the life and service of DPS Trooper Kevin Ramirez Vasquez, who died over the weekend after succumbing to injuries from a traffic accident.

The plane carrying Trooper Ramirez Vasquez’s body left Lubbock this morning, before arriving for a brief moment in Midland, and then proceeding to Houston where Ramirez Vasquez is from.

Multiple law enforcement agencies from DPS to Odessa Police to immigration and many more were present at the service to pay their respects.

“It hits home it’s very touching,” said Sgt. Steven Blanco. “It speaks volumes of the law enforcement community here in the Permian Basin that we can all come together like this. We rely on each other every day in the Permian Basin.”

DPS urges drivers to pay attention and look around the roads for any workers or DPS troopers who are on the side of the highway to prevent tragedies like this from occurring in the future.

The traffic incident involving Ramirez Vasquez is still under investigation.
