ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – In this week’s Basin Bites, I visited Masa Bakery, a family-owned panederia in Odessa. This is the perfect place to get your conchas, cuernitos, esponjas, and any other baked goods you want to pair up with a coffee to start your day.

Masa Bakery is new to Odessa as it opened a little under a month ago, but the man running the store has been baking since he was a child.

Daniel Morales has baking in his blood as he is a fourth-generation baker in his family. It started with his great-grandparents and was then passed down until it came to him. As a kid instead of enjoying vacations or time away from school, he would help his parents at their bakery, Melody’s Bakery which is still open today.

“I had no vacation growing up and so Christmas, thanksgiving all those holidays,” said Morales. “We were always at the bakery working since I could remember. And that’s how my kids are right now too. They’re in  school and they come over and they help out a little bit here and there and so that’s how you start learning.”

Although Morales told me growing up, he did not like working at his the bakery he says now that he opened Masa Bakery he enjoys everything moment of it.

“I come to have fun. I learned to love the craft of it to make bread,” says Morales. “To see the people over and over again come into my store and say I have a good product that you have good bread here, you know that’s a joy I get from it.”

Morales credits his family’s recipes as the reason people come through his door each day, calling his product unique.

“It’s original let me tell you. It’s a four generation recipe and most of our recipes we pay close attention to what we make. Our product is really unique. It’s really unique and it’s very special and I think customer really respond to it and they really love it. It’s a good product.”

Masa Bakery is located at 519 Jefferson Ave, Odessa, TX 79761, and is open from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm Monday through Friday and 8 am to 2 pm on Saturdays.
