    Sports Recap: Welch's 4 TDs power Tornadoes, Enns assists 1,000th

    Zach Welch found the end zone four times to help power Anoka past Blaine 27-14 Sept. 13, as the Tornadoes improved to 2-1 on the season. Welch ran for scores from a yard and six yards out in the first quarter, then scampered in from 36 yards away to extend the Anoka lead to 20-0 early in the second. Blaine narrowed the gap on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Sam Shaughnessy to Caden Lauwagie midway through the quarter, before Anoka picked up a key score on a 6-yard connection from Peyton Podany to Welch just before halftime to stretch the gap to 27-7. Blaine closed the scoring on a 42-yard Shaughnessy touchdown run in the fourth. Welch closed with 134 rushing yards, and Podany threw for 129 yards — with Afy Ibekwe bringing in six passes for 62 yards. Muizz Fowoshere led the Bengals with 49 rushing yards.

    Spring Lake Park scored in all three phases as it blanked Park Center 35-0 Sept. 13. Lamari Brown and EJ Monluo rushed for touchdowns, Tyler Wilkinson threw for a score to Calen Truckenbrod, Colin Welch returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown, and Teddy Wackman had a pick-six.

    Andover stormed to a 43-0 halftime lead as it cruised to a 43-8 win over Cambridge-Isanti Sept. 13. Joseph Mapson threw a pair of touchdown passes to Cameron Begalle, Wyatt Myers, Will Grant and Mapson ran for scores, and Tramaine Davis returned a block kick for a touchdown. Tristen Chenoweth forced two fumbles, Logan Kell forced a fumble, Tyler Phillips and Tyler Eppenberger recorded sacks, and Braeden Peterson had an interception.

    Fourth-ranked Totino-Grace knocked off Class AAAA’s top-ranked Hutchinson 21-20 Sept. 13. Hutchinson jumped to a 14-0 lead following the first quarter, but the Eagles leveled the score on a second-quarter touchdown run by Michael Strong, and fourth-quarter run by Marquel Keten. Hutchinson scored a touchdown on their overtime possession, but couldn’t convert a two-point try. The Eagles answered with Keten’s second touchdown run on their possession, then seized the win on Jimmy McNeil’s third extra point of the night.

    Simley defeated Fridley 33-14 Sept. 13. Marcquist Holiday rushed for 126 yards, and Jamari Powell ran for 84 yards and two touchdowns.

    Zimmerman defeated Columbia Heights 41-8 Sept. 13. Laron Collins ran for a 24-yard touchdown and made 13 tackles.

    Elk River defeated St. Francis 51-14 Sept. 13.

    St. Michael-Albertville shut out Coon Rapids 28-0 Sept. 13.

    Volleyball

    Anoka rallied from two sets down to upend section rival Forest Lake in a five-setter Sept. 12. Hayden Reeder slammed 29 kills, with eight by Ivy Manning and seven by Alaina Wilberg. Ava LaNasa had 22 digs, Piper Vaughn had 20 digs, and Kate Trombley had 35 assists and five aces.

    Andover earned a three-set win against Coon Rapids Sept. 16, led by Ali Dehnicke with 11 kills, Harper Lien with 14 assists and Avah Shaw with five aces.

    Sophomore Rilee Enns tallied career assist No. 1,000 as Legacy Christian Academy powered past Mounds Park Academy 25-6, 25-13, 25-13 Sept. 13. Enns finished with 25 assists, Addison Finney had 20 kills and Delaney Boone had nine kills.

    Paige Carlson had 14 assists and nine kills, Ava Morsfield had 12 kills and 11 digs, and Tianna Miller had 17 assists as PACT emerged with a five-set win against Coon Rapids Sept. 12.

    Columbia Heights won four of five matches at its home Columbia Heights Invitational Sept. 14, defeating St. Paul Washington 2-0, St. Paul Humboldt 2-1, Minneapolis North 2-1 and Twin Cities Academy 2-0.

    Spring Lake Park split four matches at the Farmington Invitational Sept. 14, then swept Park Center Sept. 16.

    Fridley swept Brooklyn Center Sept. 12.

    Boys soccer

    Blaine defeated Coon Rapids 4-1 Sept. 17 to improve to 5-2-2. Gavin Bellefeuille, Damir Secic, Yousef Sherian and Zach Behm scored for the Bengals.

    Leo Mostek and Henry Wredberg found the net, and Jeshua Coj Macario made six saves to lead Spring Lake Park to a 2-1 win against Park Center Sept. 14.

    Jabari Kibisu collected a hat trick to lead Totino-Grace to a 3-0 win against Anoka Sept. 17. Anoka topped Centennial 2-1 Sept. 12.

    Andover shut out Champlin Park 2-0 Sept. 17. Andover tied Coon Rapids 1-1 Sept. 12, with Caden Hanson scoring for Andover and Mitchell Gulbranson scoring for Coon Rapids.

    Taylor Olson netted the game-winner as PACT topped United Christian Academy 1-0 Sept. 17, improving to 5-1.

    Cole Murphy and Brason Orrey scored as Legacy Christian shut out Lakes International Language Academy 2-0 Sept. 17, improving to 9-0-1. Daniel Khomich made five saves.

    Columbia Heights shut out Robbinsdale Cooper 7-0 Sept. 12.

    Fridley defeated Brooklyn Center 3-2 Sept. 12.

    Girls soccer

    Spring Lake Park remained undefeated with a 3-0 shutout over Osseo Sept. 17, improving to 6-0-3. Viviana Smith scored twice, Elly Prairie had a goal and two assists, and Brooke Goerish had seven saves.

    Andover picked up a 6-1 win against Coon Rapids Sept. 12, picking up goals from Addison Dobratz, Mack Jones, Mackenzie Uecker, Payton McKnight, Paige McKnight and Ava Kowalchyk.

    St. Francis defeated Spectrum 6-1 Sept. 17 to improve to 6-1-2. Madison Hall, Paityn Pendergrass, Addison Randall, Sydney Pettey, Remington Dehaan and Avery Hicks scored.

    Blaine earned a 7-1 win against Coon Rapids Sept. 17.

    Columbia Heights topped Park Center 4-1 Sept. 17.

    Totino-Grace earned a 3-0 win against Anoka Sept. 17.

    Legacy Christian Academy defeated Lakes International Language Academy 2-1 Sept. 13.

    Boys cross-country

    Blaine earned third and Spring Lake Park finished 21st at the Eden Prairie Metro Invitational Sept. 14. Blaine was led by David Meberg in 12th, Israel Sulungaine in 19th, Jack Zellmer in 20th, Alaric Burroughs in 31st and Austin Matrious in 41st. SLP was led by Luke Fehrenbacher in 62nd.

    Andover earned ninth out of 19 teams at the Lakeville North Apple Jack Invitational Sept. 13, led by Tyler Flippen in third and Carter Stevens in 22nd.

    Girls cross-country

    Blaine earned eighth out of 23 teams at the Eden Prairie Metro Invitational Sept. 14. The Bengals were led by Audrey Schwen in seventh, Bryn Wegener in eighth and Nora Kuhn in 54th. Spring Lake Park’s Genevieve Rajkowski earned 74th.

    Andover earned eighth out of 14 teams at the Lakeville North Apple Jack Invitational Sept. 13, led by Grace Potvien in 39th and Isabel Grant in 46th.

    Girls tennis

    Blaine ran its record to 15-0 with a 4-3 win over Rogers Sept. 16. Katherine Vetsch and Amelia Leckner earned wins in singles, with victories in doubles by Andrea Shogren/Katelyn Wozniak and Emily Vogel/Paige Dahlman.

    Spring Lake Park won its seventh match in a row as it shut out Park Center 7-0 Sept. 12. Winning in singles were Santana Waisanen Sayers, Erin Tschida, Anna Smolich and Saona Sieg. Winning in doubles were Angelina Pho/Eryn Huston, Lauren Leet/Abigail Nusbaum, and Kallie Pecha/Sophia Mitties.

    Coon Rapids earned a 4-3 win against Anoka Sept. 17. Andover picked up a 6-1 win against Anoka Sept. 11.

    Fridley defeated St. Paul Johnson 5-2 Sept. 16.

    Girls swimming and diving

    Blaine topped Spring Lake Park 98-83 Sept. 12. Individual event-winners for Blaine included Reese Forrest in the 50 free and the 100 free, Sydney Hernandez in the 200 IM, Sydney Edwards in the 500 free, Alexis Edwards in the 100 backstroke and Gabby Busch in the 100 butterfly. Event-winners for Spring Lake Park included Cora Roseborough in the 200 free, Anna Milsow in the 100 breaststroke and Ellis Rotzenberg in diving.

    Anoka event-winners versus Champlin Park Sept. 12 included Ally Diehl in the 50 free and the 100 butterfly, Abigail Johnson in the 200 free, Mackenzie Solberg in the 200 IM and Kirsten Bailey in diving.

    Coon Rapids’ Delilah Smith-Ginnette won diving and Gabrielle Lewis won the 500 free versus Osseo Sept. 12.
