The driver of a tractor-trailer was killed in a serious crash on Interstate 95 Wednesday evening.

Fayetteville police said officers were called to a crash involving a tractor-trailer on fire on I-95 near the 64-mile marker and Godwin exit. Officers said the driver of the tractor-trailer was stuck in the vehicle.

Emergency crews tried to put out the fire and rescue the driver who was unable to escape.

The crash happened near the Godwin exit 65.

According to NC State Highway Patrol Trooper Revels, the tractor-trailer was in the right lane headed northbound when the driver attempted to merge into the left lane and the left front steer tire blew out and the parts of the tire caused the saddle tank to catch fire and explode. The truck then crashed into the center divider where it came to rest and burned.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

No more details have been released.

I live less than a mile from I-95 and there’s a fire station right behind the park behind my house. Nine times out of ten, when that siren goes off, the fire trucks are racing to an accident on I-95. Sounds like this particular accident was due to bad tires (because of the roads?) but most of the accidents are caused by the confusion the constant construction causes. There’s very little time to figure out where you’re supposed to drive with orange barrels EVERYWHERE and just a few yards to get into ongoing 60mph-plus traffic! Put an inexperienced driver in that situation or a tired one and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. DOT needs to get their act together!
