The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed that two EF-1 strength tornadoes touched down in Vance and Durham counties on Friday.
An EF-1 tornado touched down northeast of the town of Hampton, near Camp Butner Road and Range Road in Durham County causing damage to several buildings and uprooting trees. The weather service said the tornado reached winds of 95mph.
In Vance County, an EF-1 tornado touched down near Technology Lane and Poplar Creek Road east of Oxford. The tornado reached wind speeds of 105 mph before crossing over Interstate 85 and into the Vance and Granville Community College campus and causing damage nearby, the weather service said.
On Friday, the NWS also confirmed two other tornadoes in the ABC11 viewing area. An EF-3 twister touched down in Rocky Mount on Friday afternoon, injuring 15 people and damaging 14 buildings. An EF-1 tornado struck in Sampson County. It packed winds of 95 mph and traveled more than 3 miles, snapping trees and knocking down power poles on Helltown Road near Garland.
Ten deaths in North Carolina are among the at least 56 across the South in the wake of Helene, a powerful storm that battered Florida before moving north and swamping western Carolina.
A man died after a tree fell on his Charlotte home as Helene swept through, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to the area. Anthony "Tony" Taylor was a married father of four, ABC affiliate WSOC reported.
Another person died in a wreck in Catawba County, and ABC affiliate WXLV said a 57-year-old man died in Yadkin County when a tree fell on his car as he was driving Friday morning.
Across the Triangle
On Meadow Drive In Fuquay-Varina, firefighters freed a woman who was trapped in her bedroom because of a fallen tree. Another person and a dog in the home also escaped injury.
In Raleigh, a tree fell on an apartment complex off Wake Forest Road.

Another tree also fell on a home in Morrisville. The resident said she was shaken up but was not injured.
The water at Crabtree Creek was high after Friday's storms moved through the Triangle.
The creek is a known problem spot in Raleigh and hasn't spilled out of its banks but it is higher than it normally is.
More rain pummeled areas across the Triangle and saturated the ground even more. 501 was closed in Roxboro until 8 p.m. due to water flooding the main road through town.
Dire situation in western NC
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, all roads in western North Carolina should be considered closed.
Haywood County Sheriff's Office told people Friday morning to evacuate Cruso Clyde, Canton, and other "low-lying areas" in Waynesville, which is west of Asheville. In a social media post , it said: "Flood waters are extremely dangerous. Getting caught up in floods may result in injury or death. LEAVE NOW. Climb to higher ground. Do not drive through water."

Many were without power Friday morning, according to the Duke Energy power outage map .
