Donald Trump vows to change name of Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg during event in Fayetteville

A spirited crowd of voters attended a Town Hall held by former president and republican nominee Donald Trump on Friday in Fayetteville.

An organizer said as many as 5,000 people attended the event at the Crown Arena.

"I thought it was fantastic. Lots of good information," said NC District 43 Rep. Diane Wheatley.

During the event, the former president said he would change the name of the Cumberland County military base Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg. The change was part of a push to remove Confederate iconology from places of honor in the United States.

"The first question, I'll ask-should we change the name of Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg?" Trump asked the crowd.

Trump went on to say if elected, he would aggressively target deportation and work with law enforcement to remove undocumented immigrants in an effort he said would tackle crime. He also praised the military, saying he would raise military pay and reform healthcare for soldiers and veterans.

"We're going to take care of our veterans properly," Trump said.

The former president has visited the state several times this year. Last month, he stopped along the state's coast in Wilmington , which was his first outdoor rally since the second apparent attempt to assassinate him.

"I will protect women at a level never seen before. They will finally be healthy, hopeful, safe and secure," Trump said.

He argued women would be safer and more prosperous with him as president.

He also said women won't have to think about abortion because decisions about regulating it are now left to the states.

After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, many Republican-led states restricted or eliminated abortion access.

North Carolina banned most abortions after 12 weeks last year. Republicans in the state legislature overrode Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper's veto.

VP Kamala Harris' campaign was also active this week in the Tar Heel state.

On Sunday, Governor of Maryland Wes Moore was in NC to campaign for the Harris-Walz ticket for the 2024 election.

Harris and her running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz combined have visited the battleground state several times this year.
