Duke Energy to test all outdoor warning sirens around the Harris Nuclear plant
Duke Energy confirms the 85 outdoor warning sirens around the Harrison Nuclear Plant will be tested on Wednesday, July 10.The test is scheduled to happen between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and will range from five to 30 seconds each. Duke Energy said they're conducting the test to ensure the sirens are functioning properly.They also want the people who live or work in the area to know that they may have to test some sirens more than once.All testing is performed in cooperation with emergency officials in Chatham, Harnett, Lee and Wake counties.The testing comes after the sirens sounded Monday...

Airborne Museum faces funding shortfall that could impact public services, staffing
The Airborne Museum in Fayetteville says it's up against major funding issues. It comes after Cumberland County eliminated some of its budget last month.The museum's leadership says it has around $1 million budget for this fiscal year but following the latest cuts from Cumberland County, it's dealing with a $200,000 gap. Air condition companies adding more technicians with hot, humid weather
HVAC companies continue to see an influx of calls as the heat and humidity continues to drag on in central Carolina.Airmakers Technician Alfonso Baltazar has been darting across the Triangle and handling at least six calls a day for an emergency repair."We've been super busy," said Baltazar. "That's why Airmakers increased the amount of technicians to help us out."The work can be difficult for technicians.If Baltazar is outside, he'll set up an umbrella to block the sun from beating down on him while he works on a unit. Blake, London Deven murder case leads to state investigation into adoption process in NC
A state investigation is underway connected to the death of Blake and London Deven in Fayetteville.Their adoptive mother, Avantae Deven was charged in June with their murders.Fayetteville police say the siblings disappeared years ago and were not reported missing until another adopted child brought it to officers' attention after they responded to a crisis call in November 2023.A police investigation confirmed London's death after remains found in a barrel were identified as hers. Tools4Schools supply drive launches for Wake County teachers
Tools4Schools annual community wide school supply drive launched Tuesday morning at Staples on Wake Forest Road in Raleigh.It's an initiative through the WakeEd Partnership and the goal is to help teachers stock their classrooms at no cost to them.This initiative helped launch a supply store for teachers that's been around now for two years and has distributed $1 million in donated school supplies.The president of WakeEd Partnership says the supply drive started after finding out teachers were paying upwards of $900 out of their pockets for classroom supplies.Through the generosity of the community, teachers can now shop at the supply store once every quarter."Teachers spend a lot of money out of their own pocket buying supplies. And that's the one thing that they really would prefer not to do. And so this initiative certainly supports what they do in the classroom and then reduces the impact on their personal pocketbooks," said Dr. Robert Taylor who is the superintendent of Wake County Public Schools.Drop boxes for supplies can be found at Staples stores in Wake County.Staples is also offering a 20% in-store discount to Wake County teachers through September 14.
Alligator 'taken into custody' for loitering, trespassing at Sunset Beach police station

Wake County a step closer to naming bridge for fallen deputy Ned Byrd
Wake County is one step closer to naming a bridge in honor of fallen sheriff's deputy Ned Byrd.County commissioners have approved a request from the sheriff's office to change the name of the Auburn-Knightdale road bridge.Wake County Sheriff's Office will now submit the request to the department of transportation.Deputy Byrd was killed in the line of duty in August of 2022.In August of that year, Byrd was on patrol with his beloved K9 Sasha when he pulled over to check out suspicious activity.Two brothers are accused of ambushing him, allegedly shooting Byrd three times in the head and once in the chest.
3 killed in small plane crash in western North Carolina mountains, officials say
Three people were killed when a small plane crashed in western North Carolina, officials said Monday.McDowell County Emergency Management said in a statement that emergency personnel responding to a report of a missing small plane found the downed aircraft near the Rutherford County line. The area is about 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of Asheville. McDowell County officials later confirmed three deaths in the downed aircraft.Three people were aboard the single-engine Cessna 182 when it crashed in the mountains near Rutherfordton, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. The National Transportation Safety Board will be in charge of the investigation and will provide further updates, according to the FAA, which is also investigating.The NTSB said in a statement that preliminary information indicates that the plane, which departed Mountain City, Tennessee, and was heading to Rutherford County Airport, crashed Sunday and the wreckage was found Monday.Officials said an NTSB investigator was traveling to the scene to document and examine the wreckage. The agency is expected to issue a preliminary report within 30 days on the initial phase of its investigation though a final report with a probable cause and any contributing factors is expected to take one to two years.
