Sunday was expected to be the busiest day in the history of airline travel, with an estimated 3 million people traveling through US airports as the holiday weekend came to a close. Man struck and killed by vehicle on I-40 westbound in Durham
Durham Police are investigating a deadly crash that killed a pedestrian on Saturday night.It happened just before 10 on i-40 westbound near Fayetteville Road.Police said a man was hit by a car. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.No word yet on whether any charges will be filed.Anyone with any information is asked to call Investigator L. Pickup slams into Fayetteville home after driver loses control in curve
A pickup smashed into a home in Fayetteville late Saturday night.It happened in the 400 block of McBain Drive, with the truck slamming into the front of the home.Investigators said the driver ran off the road while going through a sharp curve.The driver also hit a utility pole causing the road to close for several hours as crews worked to repair the line.The driver was treated for injuries.There was no word on any other injuries or whether anyone was home at the time of the crash.

A man in Mebane is working to connect with the family of a World War II veteran after finding his dog tag.Ricky Hodgson loves metal detecting, and on one of his treasure hunts, he found what he thought was a piece of tin or scrap metal.He discovered that it was a dog tag belonging to a soldier named Joseph Samuel Crabtree.Hodgson knew he must find a way to return the dog tag to Crabtree's family. Body found ashore at Camp Lejeune after search for missing Goldsboro boy on New River Inlet
A body was found ashore on the base of Camp Lejeune Sunday morning, following a search for a 14-year-old boy who went missing during a July 4th fishing trip.North Topsail Beach officials said they were notified just before 10 a.m.Police responded to the base and notified the family of missing teen Mainor Perez about the found body. Shooting in Goldsboro leaves man injured, police say
A shooting in Goldsboro Saturday night has left one man injured.It happened around 6:15 p.m. in the 100 block of N. Lionel Street.According to Goldsboro Police Department, officers found one man in a parking lot suffering from gunshot wounds in the lower body. He was identified as Daktari Harris, 32 of Goldsboro.He was taken to UNC Health Wayne and then transferred to ECU Health for further treatment.No further information was released.Anyone with information about this crime, or any other crime in the Wayne County area is asked to call or text Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255 or submit a TIP at p3tips.com. Pedestrian seriously injured after getting hit by car in Fayetteville
A person was seriously injured after being hit by a car Saturday night.Just after 11:30, Fayetteville police, along with other emergency crews, were called to Bragg Boulevard and Shannon Drive for a reported pedestrian who was hit by a car.Upon arrival, authorities said units found a person in the roadway with life-threatening injuries.The victim experienced traumatic cardiac arrest, but emergency responders successfully resuscitated them with CPR.They were taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital with multiple broken bones.Additional details of this incident have not been disclosed.

Raising Cane's to expand Chapel Hill location, taking over Starbucks space
Just eight months after launching its location on Franklin Street, Raising Cane's is preparing to expand.The Triangle Business Journal reported the Louisiana-based fast-food chain will expand this location to the neighboring space at 103 East Franklin Street. Starbucks, currently located there, will be moving across the street beneath the Top of the Hill Restaurant & Brewery.The construction start date has not been announced yet. However, manager Daniel Reutzel told the TBJ that Starbucks plans to open the new location shortly before the start of UNC's fall semester on Aug. 19.Located at 101 E. Franklin Street, the Raising Cane's building -- at the corner of Columbia and Franklin Street -- was previously home to Lula's and before that Spanky's Restaurant and Bar.The Chapel Hill location is only one of three Raising Cane's locations in North Carolina. Dozens honored Ann Mathis on Saturday.Mathis, and her late husband, Moses, were the driving force behind the "Bicycle Man" program in Fayetteville.They gave out thousands of bicycles to children during three decades of service.Moses Mathis died in 2013.Ann Mathis died last month at 78.A memorial service was held Saturday at Hood Memorial AME Zion Church in Fayetteville.Ann Mathis ended the community holiday bike giveaway in 2022 saying she was ready to retire. Crews battle huge industrial fire in South Hill, Virginia
Multiple fire units battled a huge industrial fire in South Hill, Virginia, on Saturday.The fire began just before 2 p.m. on West Danville Street.The South Hill Police Department said the fire was contained around 8 p.m. Police added that there was a large amount of run-off from the fire going into area creeks. Moped operator killed, 2nd driver charged with DWI after Raleigh crash on Louisburg Road
A moped operator was killed and another driver was charged in a crash involving three vehicles, Raleigh Police said Saturday.The crash happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday on Louisburg Road.RPD identified the moped driver killed as Said Ramirez-Silva, 25.Ramirez-Silva was on a 2021 Baodiao Moped in the left-turn lane on Louisburg Road northbound when the crash happened, investigators said.RPD said Ramirez-Silva failed to yield to a 2014 Nissan Altima going south on Louisburg Road and turned in front of the car, causing the front corner of the Nissan to strike the right side of his moped.Ramirez-Silva was thrown from the moped and struck the left side of a Lexus that was turning from eastbound Fox Road onto southbound Louisburg Road.He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries.The Nissan driver, 20-year-old Jordan John, was arrested and charged with driving while impaired.The crash remains under investigation Anyone with information on this case is asked to visit CrimeStoppers at www.p3tips.com/89 for anonymous reporting options or call (919) 996-1193
7 injured in crash on US 64 eastbound near Bunn
Seven people were injured Saturday morning in a crash on U.S. 64.According to authorities, the crash was reported around 9:40 a.m. eastbound at mile marker 441, near N.C. 39. This is about four miles south of Bunn.A Ford Expedition was headed eastbound when a rear tire blew out, North Carolina State Highway Patrol said. The vehicle, which had two adults and five children inside, then hit a guardrail and flipped.The driver of the SUV was traveling at the 70-mph speed limit.Two girls, ages 10 and younger than 16 were ejected from the SUV. NCSHP said both were not wearing seatbelts.The 10-year-old sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to WakeMed in Raleigh.The others involved in the crash were also injured but are expected to recover.
