NC Central University holds ceremony for new chancellor Dr. Karrie Dixon
NC Central University formally introduced its new chancellor Dr. Karrie Dixon during a ceremony on Monday.The community welcomed the newest eagle to campus with a performance by the Sound Machine Drumline, cheerleaders and much more. Power back on for many customers in Durham, Wake and other counties after trees fall on power lines
Electricity has been restored to most customers across multiple counties in central North Carolina.Duke Energy workers spent the morning on Lakeview Drive clearing trees that fell on some power lines causing dozens to lose power.According to the Duke Energy outage map, only a few dozen homes lost power in that area because of it.Sunday night storms led to downed trees that fell or power linesThe peak of the outages was around 5:30 p.m., according to a Duke Energy map. The map now shows most across the Triangle should have their power back on.The severe weather also caused troubles at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. There are only a handful of delays and cancellations on Monday morning compared to the hundreds of flights on Sunday.This comes as Independence Day approaches. A new Miss North Carolina has been crowned.Carrie Everett was crowned on Saturday, June 29.Everett is Miss Johnston County and is a rising Sophomore at NC Central University (NCCU). 2 men die in Tarboro shooting, Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office says
Two people died in a shooting in Tarboro Sunday morning.Just after 3 a.m., the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office responded to a call saying several people were shot at Branchwood Lane.According to authorities, deputies found two men dead. They were later identified as Odis Ray Draughn III, 29, and Tellton Jaymel Jones, 28.They also found a third victim, the sheriff's office said, and they were taken to ECU Health with a gunshot wound.ABC11 is working to learn the name of the third victim.This is an ongoing investigation.
Shooting at Fayetteville nightclub leaves 1 dead, 1 injured
A shooting at a Fayetteville nightclub Sunday morning leaves one person injured and another dead.Just after 1 a.m., the Fayetteville Police Department was called to Rumors Lounge on South Eastern Boulevard for a shooting. Officers said they found two men with gunshot wounds.Both were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment.One victim, 28-year-old Joseph Bell died from his injuries. GoTriangle receives $25 million federal grant to build new transit hub in RTP
GoTriangle received a $25 million federal grant to help improve the agency's regional transit connectivity.According to a press release, the funds will go toward building a new multimodal transportation center, the Triangle Mobility Hub, in Research Triangle Park. Driver leads state troopers on chase before barricading inside Pittsboro home
A driver led state troopers on a chase Saturday night before barricading himself inside a PIttsboro home.Just before 11 p.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol tried to stop a car in Wake County on I-87 near I-440. This resulted in a pursuit. The chase continued on I-40 until the suspect car got off at Exit 273.The driver of the car was later identified as 47-year-old Chad Vernon Clark of Pittsboro.According to the state highway patrol, officials lost sight of the suspect vehicle for a short period. Clark was eventually found as he pulled into the driveway of his Pittsboro home. He then ran and barricaded himself inside the house.With assistance from the Chatham County Sheriff's Office and Pittsboro Police Department, Clark was taken into custody at 5 a.m.No one was injured during the pursuit or arrest, authorities confirmed.Clark underwent an impairment evaluation at a UNC-Chapel Hill hospital before being taken to the Wake County Detention Facility.He was charged with speeding, felony fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving, driving while license revoked and failure to heed to lights or siren. Additional charges are expected.

Three people were shot Saturday morning in Raleigh.It happened just before 5 a.m. outside a business near the corner of Millbrook Road and Atlantic Avenue.Two men and one woman were injured in the shooting. Serious injuries reported after driver veers off road, hits 3 stationary cars in Pembroke
Multiple people were hospitalized when a driver slammed into a Hoke County deputy's cruiser and two other cars on the side of a highway Friday night.The crash happened around 11 p.m. at the intersection of NC-711 and Town Park Drive in Pembroke.Investigators said the deputy was sitting on the side of the road with two other cars when a driver veered off the right side of the road and slammed into the stationary cars.Nobody died in the crash, but there were serious injuries. The specifics on those injuries have not been released, but two medivac helicopters airlifted patients to the hospital.
