Camps change programs to keep kids safe during dangerous heat: 'Don't take that risk'
Thousands of children are in summer camp as this hot weather sweeps through our region. Crypto crook convicted in home invasions to steal digital currency
A Florida man accused of several violent home invasions to steal thousands of dollars in cryptocurrency has been convicted.According to trial evidence, Remy St Felix, 24, of West Palm Beach, and a co-conspirator forced their way into the victims' homes in Durham, Florida, Texas and New York.Documents show that in the Durham case, they zip-tied and held the 76-year-old couple at gunpoint.They then threatened more violence against the victim and the victim's spouse while other co-conspirators transferred more than $150,000 in crypto from the victim's account."The victims in this case suffered a horrible, painful experience that no citizen should have...
1 seriously injured in Wade Ave crash that shut down I-40 East in Raleigh
A crash involving several vehicles on Interstate 40 shut down all eastbound lanes on Tuesday afternoon and left one person with very serious injuries.The crash happened near Wade Avenue.Chopper 11 flew over the scene and saw the four vehicles involved in the crash.Firetrucks and police cars blocked all five lanes of the interstate at around 4 p.m. The backup stretched for miles.One person was hospitalized in serious condition, Raleigh Police said. RPD added that the road was shut down for an extended period because of the extent of the injuries involved.At 5 p.m., first responders began diverting traffic off the interstate at Harrison Avenue.At 5:10 p.m., first responders reopened three lanes of traffic at the crash site. All lanes were reopened by 6:15 p.m.Police said the crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.

Singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter will make a stop in Raleigh as part of her upcoming Short n' Sweet tour.She performs at PNC Arena on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.The tour is supporting the 'Nonsense' singer's upcoming album, Short n' Sweet, out Aug. 23. Her two singles "Please Please Please" and "Espresso" from the album have already hit the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100.Griff will be opening for Carpenter in Raleigh. 1 dead after heavy work truck overturns in Sampson County
One person is dead after a crash Monday evening involving a heavy work truck.At about 4:30 p.m., Clement Fire Department was called to Sivertsen Road and Halltown Road, which is north of Autryville.Upon arrival, units said they found a Machine & Welding Supply truck, a 2014 Hino, upside down. Multiple tanks were leaking industrial gases.The driver, identified as Jackson David Parker, 25 of Fayetteville, was still inside the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.According to Trooper Hall, the truck was traveling south on Sivertsen Road when it ran off the road. It overturned and crossed a ditch before landing upside down.Aurtryville Fire Department, Wade Community Fire Department and City of Fayetteville Fire Department assisted with the incident.This is Sampson County's 10th fatal collision of the year.

Red Hat Amphitheater set to have record-breaking year
Downtown Raleigh's Red Hat Amphitheater is set to have a record-breaking year.The City of Raleigh reports the venue is set to see a record-breaking number of concerts this year.About 51 concerts are on the books that's nearly triple the number when the venue first opened back in 2010.Red Hat contributed $17.5 million in economic impact last year.The amphitheater is slated to move a block south from its current location as part of the plans to expand the Raleigh Convention Center.

Driver falls asleep, car overturns and lands on culvert under road
A rollover crash in Cumberland County Tuesday morning sent one person to the hospital.Just before 12:30 a.m., Cotton Fire Department was called to the 1300 block of Tom Starling Road for a vehicle crash.Upon arrival, first responders found a Toyota Corolla off the roadway with its rear down an embankment.The driver was taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital with injuries.According to investigators, the driver was traveling east on Tom Starling, who then fell asleep and traveled off the road. The car struck a guardrail and a telephone communication box before overturning and coming to rest on a culvert beneath the road.The culvert is approximately six feet in diameter and is used to drain Rockfish Creek.No further information was released about how serious the driver's injuries were.

Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has long called gun violence an epidemic in the United States.He is now taking a major step forward declaring gun violence a public health crisis. Tuesday morning, he issued an advisory report, detailing the consequences gun violence poses on health and the wellbeing of the country.It included its impact on children, communities, and families.By The Numbers Gun violence is the leading cause of death among children and adolescents. More than half of adults surveyed reported that they or their family members have experienced gun violence. This includes a family member killed, witnessed a shooting and fired a gun. Nearly six of ten adults say they worry about their loved ones being victims of gun violence. Exotic African wild cat causes stir on North Carolina beach
At the beach, you might expect to hear about a shark bite, rip currents or even an alligator.But it's safe to say an encounter with an exotic African cat wasn't on most North Carolina beachgoers' bingo cards.But that's what happened in Carteret County where, fortunately, this big cat, a serval, had an owner -- and a leash.Mia Swift brought her serval, to Emerald Isle Beach. As ABC affiliate WCTI put it, "This sparked curiosity among the Emerald Isle community, leading to numerous reactions on social media."WCTI spoke to Swift to find out what the deal was.Swift said she occasionally takes her wild cat, named Kenai, to the beach during off-peak hours.
