The continuing population boom in the Triangle is creating a lot of competition in the real estate market. North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T), the country's largest historically Black university (HBCU), has a new chancellor after nearly nine months of searching.Friday, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors unanimously voted to name James Martin II as the university's next chancellor. The chancellor search was initially prompted in September when Chancellor Harold L. Martin announced his retirement. Joe Biden to visit North Carolina following presidential debate against Donald Trump
President Joe Biden will be making another visit to North Carolina this month.According to his schedule, the president and his wife will spend the night in Raleigh on June 27.That's the same day as the first presidential debate. Boil water advisory lifted for Durham, city officials say
A boil water advisory issued Friday for a section of Durham has been lifted.An area in northwest Durham was experiencing periods of low pressure and outages because of low pressure caused by operational issues. This increases the potential for back siphonage, along with an introduction of bacteria into the water.City officials said that based on the results of water samplings, Durham Water no longer advises the impacted residents to boil water used for human consumption."This advisory has been precautionary. We believe our water met, and continues to meet, all water quality standards throughout the advisory," the City of Durham said in an update. Gov. Cooper vetoes face mask bill, says it creates 'loophole for secret, unlimited campaign money'
Governor Roy Cooper vetoed House Bill 237, which would restrict wearing masks in public.Known as the Unmasking Mobs and Criminals Act, the bill is purported to make it easier to prosecute people trying to hide behind a mask while committing a crime. This would repeal the pandemic-era exemption that allowed mask-wearing for health reasons.The bill passed in the Senate in a 30-15 vote last month but initially failed in the House because it didn't provide enough protections for people with medical conditions. SpaceX says mysterious objects found in North Carolina mountains are part of spacecraft
Two mysterious objects found 40 miles apart in the North Carolina mountains have been identified as parts from a SpaceX aircraft.According to ABC affiliate WLOS, a statement from NASA Public Affairs on Thursday, June 20, confirmed what many had wondered for weeks.Both objects were found near the end of May. They're black with what appeared to be carbon fiber weaving and burnt titanium.Justin Clontz, a grounds maintenance worker at The Glamping Collective, found the first object. It was approximately 3 feet high and too heavy to carry. Clontz had to get a lawn mower to tow it off the trail.Mike Wooten found the second object in his yard. He said he heard a thump on the roof of his house and noticed the object in his yard when he went outside to investigate.NASA officials advised anyone who finds a piece of space debris to not handle or retrieve it. Instead, people are asked to contact the SpaceX Debris Hotline at 1-866-623-0234.

Over 800 new jobs are coming to rural communities across North Carolina.The state's Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA) is an appointed 17-member board that awards Rural, Community Development Block Grants and Utility grant funds.Governor Roy Cooper announced Thursday the RIA approved 20 grant requests to local governments, which totals over $8 million. 2-year-old girl among 3 shot near Durham apartment complex
A two-year-old is in serious condition and two others were injured after a shooting on Thursday evening in Durham.The incident happened just before 8:15 p.m. at Campus Crossings at Durham in the 1400 block of East Cornwallis Road. Police said when officers arrived a two-year-old girl, a man and a woman were found with gunshot wounds.All three were taken to the hospital. Police said the man and woman had non-life threatening injuries.The two-year-old is being treated for what police said are life threatening injuries.ABC11 crews described seeing multiple evidence markers at the scene.Witnesses said they heard multiple gun shots at the time of the shooting.Anyone with any information is asked to call Investigator M. Wake Crisis Intervention Team Awards Luncheon honors first responders
More than a dozen Wake County first responders were honored Thursday.The first responders were recognized for their role in helping Triangle residents in crisis. It was all part of the annual Wake Crisis Intervention Team Awards Luncheon.The event celebrates the hard work of local Crisis Intervention Team officers, EMS staff and volunteers who successfully assist someone with mental health, substance abuse struggles or intellectual developmental disability who was going through a crisis."A lot of places now send some sort of mental health clinician along side a police officer, or sometimes there may be a police officer that waits outside when they send a mental health professional, because it could be distressing to see a uniformed officer," one attendee at the luncheon said.ABC11 Anchor Amber Rupinta emceed the luncheon this year.
UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center appoints new executive director
UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center announced its new executive director.Dr. Robert Ferris, who currently serves as director of the Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh, will take over beginning in October.Ferris, a head and neck surgical oncologist, graduated from UNC with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He earned his medical degree and PhD in immunology from Johns Hopkins Medical School, where he also completed his residency, and was chief resident, in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery.He succeeds Shelley Earp, MD, who announced he was stepping down in the fall of last year. Earp served as director twice from 1997-2014 and 2018-2024.Ferris spoke with ABC11 about his experience and vision for the role."Bringing expertise in cancer immunotherapy, building recruitments in programs to be able to get that across the Triangle and across the state of North Carolina, where it's already happening and just strengthening that. But also being able to link the genomic and revolution in personalized therapy," he said.Ferris' wife, Dr. Laura Ferris, is also coming to the health system and will serve as chair of the Department of Dermatology.
NC Department of Transportation developing new method to reduce hydroplaning
Some sections of pavement will soon look different on I-40 in Johnston County.The North Carolina Department of Transportation and university research partners are developing a new method to enhance skid resistance along the state's highways.The DOT said a " shotblasting " strategy is being evaluated and will generate more texture on the pavement surface to allow for better drainage during wet weather and enhance frictional force between the tire and pavement.According to the department, the shotblasting machine collects dust and contaminants during the process and does not use chemical products or wastewater.The DOT said the new method will help reduce hydroplaning incidents.This method has been used on new pavement set to open to traffic soon between southeast Raleigh and Clayton. Second Harvest holds biggest ever food giveaway as hunger rises in the Sandhills
Second Harvest Food Bank in Fayetteville hosted its biggest food giveaway in its history Friday because of the rising number of families experiencing hunger in the Sandhills.The food drive is expected to give away 100,000 pounds of food.
