An Asheville man is sentenced to more than 200 days in jail after a jury determined he sexually abused an unconscious victim in 2022 and recorded the crime on his cell phone.The Buncombe County District Attorney's Office said Bart William Zink, 55, was found guilty of felony secret peeping and misdemeanor sexual battery on July 11, 2024.It's a case that District Attorney Todd Williams called "outrageous" in a written statement, calling on the North Carolina General Assembly to pass tougher laws against aggravated sexual battery.The victim testified that on May 22, 2022, she was invited to Zink's house for a...

2.2 magnitude quake rumbles Sparta area near Virginia border, US Geological Survey says
A small earthquake shook the Town of Sparta near the Virginia border Saturday morning.With a magnitude of 2.2, it happened around 5:45 a.m., according to the United States Geological Survey.This is the fourth one in the last month.On June 18, two earthquakes happened in the Sparta area:2.3 magnitude quake happened at 4:41 a.m. 2.3 magnitude quake happened about 30 minutes laterThe following day, the earth rumbled again. Driver freed after being trapped inside SUV from collision in Cumberland County
A driver is being treated for injuries after being trapped inside an SUV after a collision in Cumberland County.The accident happened Friday after 9 p.m. The Godwin-Falon Fire Rescue and Wade Community Fire Department responded to the intersection of U.S. Highway 301 and NC Highway 82 for a vehicle crash and found the driver of one vehicle pinned inside. Investigators said a Toyota Rav-4 and Dodge Durango had collided at the intersection causing the Rav-4 to overturn in a ditch.According to authorities, the windshield of the SUV had to be removed to free the driver who first responders say was not seriously injured.The two people inside the Durango were sent to Cape Fear Valley Hospital. Raleigh to host 'Saturday on South' party downtown to share info on changes in the area

One person is dead after authorities said a vehicle slid off the road and into a creek in Durham.The Durham Police Department and fire crews worked to remove the car from the Ellerbe Creek near Midland Terrace. Authorities said only one person was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.Police said Corey Lewis, 32, of Durham was pronounced dead at the scene.The cause of the crash has not been released.Police are asking that anyone who witnessed the crash or who has information about the crash contact Investigator J. 83-year-old Fayetteville man charged with murder in connection with wife's death
A Fayetteville man is facing a first-degree murder charge after police said he killed his wife.The Fayetteville Police Department responded to calls about a shooting in the 600 block of Pleasant Loop on Wednesday morning. Officers said they found Betsy Craven Brewer, 83, dead from a gunshot wound.Police said 83-year-old Leslie David Brewer Sr. was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder.According to authorities, Brewer said he and his wife were having a dispute at their home that stretched back years.
