Sales at a North Carolina-based ice-making plant are red hot as the temperatures continue to climb.Holiday Ice is experiencing a dramatic rise in demand and staff spent Monday replenishing the supply of bagged ice. This is after the heat index during the weekend hit triple digits and temperatures show no signs of cooling off anytime soon."It is our peak season. Federal funding announced for affordable housing in southeast Raleigh
New federal funding was announced Monday for an affordable housing development in southeast Raleigh.The money is for the Cottages of Idlewild development.Congressman Wiley Nickel joined Raleigh leaders to announce $560,000 in federal funding for what will be the city's first cottage court development.The 18-unit affordable-cottage community will offer homeownership and rental opportunities for individuals or households earning between 50% and 80% of the area's median income."This is the thing that matters for the folks that I represent; getting the cost of housing down," Nickel said. "Costs are far too high. We need to do much more, but today we get to celebrate progress. This will be a home for many families and it is going to be great affordable housing."The project will use a public land trust model in which residents own their homes but not the land they sit on.North Carolina Central men's basketball coach LeVelle Moton is one of the developers behind the project. A major goal behind it is to increase Black homeownership in a historically Black part of the city.

Rip currents, sharks and now an alligator scare along North Carolina beaches
Rip currents and sharks aren't the only threats on the coast.An alligator provided a scare at Sunset Beach last week.The 5-foot gator was hanging out under someone's car outside a restaurant.Police said officers typically will not remove alligators if they're just in someone's yard or other populated areas but because this gator posed a risk to public safety, the big reptile was relocated.Alligators are protected under North Carolina state law.

Driver slams into Durham restaurant near Fayetteville Street
A driver lost control and slammed into a Durham restaurant Sunday night.It happened around 10:30 p.m. at Mezcalito, a Mexican restaurant on the corner of Fayetteville Street and Ramseur Street.The crash left a gaping hole where the kitchen was.There were about 25 people inside including a few people finishing their meals. No one was hurt, but some employees were shaken up.Anthonio Rivas, the manager of Mezcalito, said there was a server in the area about 15 seconds before the crash happened. Two people are in custody after police said they attempted to steal from a store and led officers on a chase that ended in a crash.The Wake Forest Police Department said the incident happened at the Walmart shopping center on South Main Street.Police said officers pulled over the vehicle involved in the incident, which drove away quickly. 3 rescued after boat sinks on Harris Lake, Wake County Sheriff's Office says
Three men were rescued from Harris Lake Sunday morning.At 11:30 a.m., members of the Wake County Sheriff's Office Boat Team responded to a report of a sinking boat.According to WCSO, when deputies arrived, they could locate the boat and rescue one passenger. NWS cancels heat advisory for several areas across central NC
The National Weather Service in Raleigh has canceled a heat advisory that was in effect for several areas across eastern portions of central North Carolina on Sunday.According to NWS, high temperatures reached the mid and upper 90s in some areas throughout the afternoon with a heat index reaching up to 104 degrees.The heat wave is expected to continue through midweek under generally dry conditions.Monday carries less of a risk for a thunderstorm lingering around the Triangle, with short-term modeling in rather stout agreement that any afternoon storm fires up in the general I-95 corridor, mainly east of the area.How to stay coolHot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat-related illnesses.People are recommended to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors.According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, those who work outdoors should schedule frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
Highway patrol car hits car after high-speed chase in Johnston County
A high-speed chase ended in a crash overnight in Johnston County.The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the chase started just before 12 a.m. on I-40 near the 320 and 322-mile marker.A trooper attempted to pull over a Dodge Challenger, but the driver Lamine Mckenly Lo, 26, of Raeford, sped off when the trooper got out of his vehicle.Authorities said Lo then exited I-40 onto I-95 heading south and then tried to take exit 79. Speeds reached 100 miles per hour.Troopers said Lo's vehicle then ran off the road to the left on the exit ramp and hit a guardrail before flipping. The patrol car then hit the car, unable to avoid it.There were no reported injuries.The Lo was arrested and taken to the Johnston County Detention Center. A woman who was also inside the Challenger was detained but later released.He is charged with felony flee to elude arrest, possession of stolen motor vehicle, failed to heed blue lights and siren, and multiple other misdemeanors including speeding and reckless driving.Highway patrol said the Challenger and license plate were reported stolen.
Thousands attend regional conference for international public service sorority
Downtown Raleigh was filled with a wave of crimson and cream on Saturday as more than 3,000 ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated took over the Raleigh convention center.The regional conference celebrates the work of the chapters in North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, and Bermuda.
