83-year-old Fayetteville man charged with murder in connection with wife's death
A Fayetteville man is facing a first-degree murder charge after police said he killed his wife.The Fayetteville Police Department responded to calls about a shooting in the 600 block of Pleasant Loop on Wednesday morning. Officers said they found Betsy Craven Brewer, 83, dead from a gunshot wound.Police said 83-year-old Leslie David Brewer Sr. was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder.According to authorities, Brewer said he and his wife were having a dispute at their home that stretched back years. 500k enrolled in NC's Medicaid expansion program, Gov. Roy Cooper says
A little over 500,000 people are enrolled in North Carolina's new Medicaid coverage program, Governor Roy Cooper announced at the executive Mansion Friday morning.This is just in the first seven months since the program's inception.The full health benefits coverage for some adults ages 19-64 who earn too much to qualify for traditional Medicaid began on Dec. 1. One person is left without a home after a fire at an apartment building in Raleigh.It happened around 1 a.m. on Crest Drive across from NC State South Campus.According to fire officials, 45 firefighters helped to put out the flames. One unit sustained fire damage, while three others had smoke damage.There were no reported injuries.The cause of the fire is under investigation.The Red Cross will be helping the one person displaced.

Garner man sentenced to 20 years in connection to robbery, carjacking in Raleigh
A Garner man will spend the next 20 years in prison after authorities said he robbed a Raleigh Walmart and carjacked a woman at Crabtree Valley Mall.According to court documents, on May 11, 2023, 31-year-old Thomas Kyle Cauther went on a crime spree where he used a tool to smash a glass display case in the Walmart store on Fayetteville Road in Raleigh. Harnett County teacher charged with sex crimes involving student
A Harnett County teacher has been accused of an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student, Sheriff Wayne Coats said.On Tuesday, a Harnett County grand jury issued a true bill of Indictment against Makenzie Deray Parham, 26, for two counts of sexual activity with a student and five counts of indecent liberties with a student.Parham was a teacher at Triton High School in Erwin.The sheriff's office began investigating the allegations on May 10.Parham turned herself in on Thursday at the Harnett County Detention Center on the outstanding charges.Parham was given a secured bond of $70,000 and was being held in the Harnett County Detention Center.
