(WHTM) — In this day and age, it is hard to go without a phone and kids seem to always be on social media, which can lead to impacts on their mental health.

Clinical psychologist at UPMC Doctor Melissa Brown says that usually the impacts are negative but there are some positives.

“One of the big things that we see is depression, anxiety, comparison, body image issues,” she said, adding that “not all are negative, there can be some positives but for the large majority they are negative.”

Brown says one of the biggest things that they see with kids is that they compare themselves or tend to get anxiety because they may see that they are missing out on an event. That can lead to “this anxiety about what’s wrong with me. Sometimes that is intentional, that’s a type of bullying that does exist.”

And unfortunately, Brown says they have been seeing this happen with even younger kids more often. As for advice for teens, Brown says to set limits.

“Make sure that you are putting time frames and limits on how much time you are spending on social media platforms,” Brown says. “Make sure you have a trusted adult you can go to.”
