The fire police officer was directing traffic there for a separate crash.

“Today’s incident is a tragedy in our community,” Newberry Township Police said in a statement. “Volunteer emergency responders are a crucial part of public safety system for our community. They selflessly volunteer their time on a daily basis knowing the risks associated with their tasks.”
