Police say Peek was directing traffic there for a separate crash.

“Today’s incident is a tragedy in our community,” Newberry Township Police said in a statement. “Volunteer emergency responders are a crucial part of public safety system for our community. They selflessly volunteer their time on a daily basis knowing the risks associated with their tasks.”

The incident is under investigation by Pennsylvania State Police.

The Goldsboro Fire Company, of which Peek was a member, released a statement Sunday afternoon.

It is with deep sadness that we share the heartbreaking loss of one of our own, Brian Peek. Brian was a selfless, devoted member of our fire company and dedicated to his family. He will be greatly missed by many. Please remember his family during this difficult time. We will share further information on his arrangements as they become available.
