LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — Lancaster County is number one in the country for farmland preservation and it isn’t stopping anytime soon.

Seven more farms totaling 652 acres will now be preserved across the county. More than $2-million of state funding and $540,000 of county funding is being used.

Once a farm is preserved, the development rights are owned by the county or municipality and the contract says that land can never be bought by a developer.

“Farmers do this because they love what they do,” Lancaster County Commissioner Ray D’Agostino said. “They love the fact that they’re providing for the community and they love that land. They want to see it like they’ve seen generations before them. They want to see it generations afterwards.”
