HARRISBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Pennsylvania Senate has plans to introduce legislation that would affect handwriting being taught in schools.

The legislation , written by Senator Wayne Langerholc (R-Cambria), would require Pennsylvania schools to teach cursive handwriting. Currently, at least 18 states mandate the teaching of cursive, including but not limited to states such as Alabama, Florida, California and Maryland.

In recent years, there has been a decrease in cursive writing in the classroom and an increased emphasis on digital literacy and standardized testing. Despite these trends, Langerholc believes that cursive writing is still an essential skill that supports “broader educational and developmental outcomes.”
