MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (WHTM) — The No. 8 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions kick off the 2024-2025 college football season with a road matchup against the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Nittany Lions are looking to earn their sixth straight win and 50th win all-time against the Mountaineers.

This is the second straight year Penn State will open a season against West Virginia. Penn State has won 19 of its last 22 season-opening contests and seven of its last eight.

The Nittany Lions are 113-22-2 all-time in season openers and 21-11 in season openers on the road, including an 18-10 mark against non-Big Ten opponents.

• Where: Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium – Morgantown, West Virginia

Penn State will appear as FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff for Week One. Penn State was the Big Noon Kickoff featured game three times in 2023.

Penn State is 17-6-1 in road games at West Virginia and has won 33 of the last 35 matchups against the Mountaineers. In last year’s contest against WVU, Penn State cruised to a 38-15 victory when Drew Allar threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns, while Nicholas Singleton rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown. Penn State held the Mountaineers to 162 passing yards, while collecting three sacks.

West Virginia went 9-4 in 2023, finishing the year with a 30-10 win over North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The Mountaineers were 6-3 in Big 12 play, including wins over Texas Tech, TCU, UCF, BYU, Cincinnati and Baylor. WVU is receiving votes in the AP and Coaches Polls to begin the season.
