YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — Recent positive test results of a highly contagious disease between dogs are causing a Midstate animal shelter to close off public browsing for a few weeks.

Two dogs among a batch that were recently rescued and placed into the York County SPCA’s care tested positive for canine parvovirus (parvo), the shelter shared on Facebook Tuesday. A humane society police officer rescued five dogs from deplorable living conditions in a hoarding case, and they were brought to the SPCA.

Public browsing for canines is now closed off to the public for the next two weeks until at least Sept. 17 because of the positive tests for parvo, the post states. Cat and small animal browsing is still available.

At first, when the dogs arrived at the shelter they were tested and the results came back negative, but within the past couple of days some became symptomatic. According to the post, the SPCA believes the dogs already had parvo when they came to the shelter, but it was undetectable at the time.

An adoption questionnaire is being offered for those to fill out if they want to adopt dogs, and SPCA officials will reach out to schedule a meeting time. To make an appointment, call 717-764-6109 or email info@ycspca.org.

Parvo virus is only transmissible between dogs, meaning that humans can not get it.

Dogs can also be viewed online through the SPCA’s website.
