Mommy Minute: Consignment event offers chance to sell, save

Shellie Wadas owns Just Between Friends Harrisburg, a huge consignment event with tens of thousands of items up for sale. In addition to clothing, you can find room decor, shoes and sports gear.

“Toys and games and books and puzzles and movies,” Wadas said. “If your kid uses it, we sell it.”

Wadas said the event is designed to help families get the essentials while avoiding increasingly expensive price tags.

“We are about helping families say ‘yes’ to all those things they need and not feeling like they have to pick and choose,” she said.

All items consigned by local families are checked for quality.

“We look for no rips, no holes, no stains…just gently loved items,” she said. “Same thing with toys; we make sure they’re working. We ask them to put batteries in them so we can turn them on and check.”

Wadas said the average U.S. consumer throws out more than 80 pounds of clothing a year. This event not only helps families earn and save but reduce and recycle.

“Would you believe I found a cashmere sweater for my 4-year-old,” she said. “There’s so much life in that.”

At the event they also have a recall specialist who works with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to ensure that all items being sold are safe.
