(WHTM) — A social media challenge showed thieves how to break in and steal Kia vehicles. Now those Kia owners face a new problem as a result of those thefts.

Owners of certain Kias and Hyundais have been worrying about their cars getting stolen for several years now, and they also have to worry about getting insurance.

Judy Roberts says her 2017 Kia Optima was perfect, but it’s obviously not perfect for insurance companies in trying to find a new insurer, after a rate hike, she discovered most companies didn’t want her.

“I called Progressive a couple of months ago, they said no,” Roberts said. “I called Allstate, they told me the same thing. I went to State farm as well and they told me the same thing.”

The apparent reason: the “Kia challenge” on TikTok, which has resulted in the theft of thousands of Hyundais and Kias model years 2011 through 2019.

Now Roberts does have basic insurance coverage on her car but she says her current insurer is making it difficult to pay her monthly bill, she is wondering if they are trying to get her to leave.

“This last payment I had to overnight to them,” she said. “It cost me $30.”

We’ve reached out to her insurer, to ask why it is so difficult for her to autopay on her debit card. After several national news reports, State Farm, Progressive, and Allstate now tell NPR that they are not insuring certain Kias and Huyndais susceptible to the TikTok theft wave.

    “Its very frustrating,” Roberts said.

Good news: NPR says current cars are grandfathered in but Roberts wonders how long she can stay with her insurer.

If you are in this situation, keep shopping, several major insurance companies will still insure older Kias and Hyundais, and that way you don’t waste your money.
