PENNSYLVANIA (WHTM) – Earlier this year, Governor Josh Shapiro helped launch a program that gives workers for DoorDash benefits.

“I really like working for DoorDash while also having access to health insurance, vision insurance, dental insurance to cover costs for prescriptions, co-pays, doctor’s appointments and therapy,” said Fanta Keita of Philadelphia.

Benefits also include paid time off and retirement savings. Benefits is something Fanta Keita didn’t have access to until earlier this year when Pennsylvania became the first in the country to give them to food delivery workers but just for those who work for DoorDash.

“I definitely think they should make it available to all contractors because health is very important,” said Keita.

Which is something lawmakers are working on.

The Banking and Insurance Senate Committee voted and passed Senate Bill 967. If signed into law, it would establish portable benefits and protections for all app-based workers.

The benefits program is currently a six-month pilot program, ending next month.

The bill will now go to the senate for a vote.
