    Pennsylvania pet food company issues recall after positive salmonella, listeria tests

    FLEETWOOD, Pa. (WHTM) — A Pennsylvania pet food company is voluntarily recalling certain lots of beef and chicken formula for dogs after reports of positive testing for salmonella and listeria.

    According to the FDA , certain batches of ANSWERS Detailed Beef Formula for Dogs, ANSWERS Straight Beef Formula for Dogs, and ANSWERS Straight Chicken Formula for Dogs have been voluntarily recalled out of an abundance of caution.

    The FDA says no illnesses associated with these lots have been confirmed.

    The lots involved with the recall can be seen in the chart below.

    The FDA says Listeria monocytogenes rarely cause illness in dogs, but it is possible. Dogs can have mild symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting, and even if a dog is not showing symptoms, it can still be a carrier of the bacteria and spread it to humans.

    Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Pets can also be healthy carriers and infect humans or other animals.

    The FDA adds that Listeria symptoms in humans may include fever, headache, muscle aches, stiff neck, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Salmonella symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever.

    Young children, elderly people, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable, and if your pet has consumed food from the affected lots, you should contact a veterinarian. If you desire a refund, submit a receipt and pictures of the product to info@answerspetfood.com along with the retailer’s information.

    Thank God I identify as a cat. I can eat almost anything and not get sick. Just ask my old lady about 3 year old Gingersnap cookies I found hiding in the cupboard.
