NEWBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WHTM) — One person was shot in the chest in Newberry Township in an apparent accidental shooting over the weekend , and police say a teen is facing charges.

Joseph Silva, 18, of Etters, was charged with felony aggravated assault after the Saturday shooting on the 300 block of Cly Road, charging documents from Newberry Township Police show.

Fugitive wanted by FBI, U.S. Marshals, arrested in York County

According to the charges, police found one man with a gunshot wound to the chest in the front yard. He was rushed to the hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

Silva, who was still at the scene, was interviewed by police and stated that he and three friends, including the victim, were remodeling a room that he was going to be living in.

According to police, the group was getting things from Silva’s former home, one of the items being a Harrington & Richardson Arms Company revolver-style handgun, that was described as an “antique” firearm which Silva said he hangs on the wall.

During the investigation and other interviews, it was learned that the victim asked Silva to see the firearm. Silva got it, and took it to him, first unloaded but he then put one round in to “show” him, the charges show.

The handgun then discharged, hitting the victim in the chest area, according to the charges. The victim then ran outside to the yard where they were given first aid by people at the scene, before being taken to the hospital.

Silva yelled for someone to call 911 before he allegedly threw the gun into the woods behind the property, according to police.

Silva is locked up in York County Prison with bail set at $5,000 and awaits a preliminary hearing scheduled for Oct. 7.
