SHIRLEY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WTAJ) – Huntingdon County’s commissioners approved a resolution this week to extend an opportunity for economic development in an effort to attract new businesses.

Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development offers the Keystone Opportunity Zone program, which exempts a set area from specific taxes. In Huntingdon, that area is the Riverview Business Center in Shirley Township.

The zone is set to expire at the end of 2024, but the new resolution would extend it by a decade.

“We want to make it more attractive for businesses to come here and employ our folks,” Commissioner Scott Walls said.

There are already several small businesses in the area, but with 54 acres of land to work with, Walls says that there is room to grow. He sees it as an opportunity for businesses and the economy alike.

The next step is for Shirley Township and Mt. Union Area School District to approve the resolution, and then the DCED will have the final say.
