HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The Harrisburg School District will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its newly renovated, revitalized, and expanded Steele Elementary School Tuesday evening.

The school was originally built in the 1930’s and closed back in 2011. It is now back open, serving 400 pre-k through 5th grade students who live in the Uptown section of Harrisburg.

Dr. Marcia Stokes, Chief Financial Officer and Acting Superintendent said the $21.6 million dollar project allowed them to re-district and bring all of its 5th grade students back into elementary levels.

“I think that the district has created this elementary that is really like a flagship elementary school for us, because not only does it bring back the neighborhood concept, but it also brings back the kids into a wonderful, warm, inviting space. It is beautiful inside, it really is a jewel of Uptown,” said Dr. Stokes.

The newly renovated school has a modern heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. Along with state-of-the-art classrooms, up-to-date technology, and a modern design.

The district says the project was made possible with funds from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund, that it received during the pandemic.

The school also has a dedicated group instruction room, as well as art, music, and special education classrooms, and more.

The ribbon-cutting is slated to begin Tuesday, October 1, at 5:30. The location of the school is at 2537 N. 5 th Street in Harrisburg.
