(WHTM) — It will soon be more difficult to monitor police activity for those with scanners in one Midstate county.

Dauphin County announced plans to encrypt all police radio transmissions on Wednesday, saying it “is to ensure the safety of the law enforcement responders.”

The county says lead law enforcement officials requested radio encryption under the direction of District Attorney Fran Chardo.

Dauphin is the latest county to encrypt police radio communications in eastern Pennsylvania, along with the Pennsylvania State Police, who operate their own radio system independent of county communications centers.

The county also cites the risk of criminal behavior from those listening to the broadcasts with “ill intent” as a contributing factor to the decision.

On the other hand, the Dauphin County Department of Public Safety launched a website that will now list fire calls and medical incidents across the county. The Department says the site intends to keep residents and the media informed of emergency incidents in the county.
