(WHTM) – Across Pennsylvania, the leaves are starting to change and both visitors and residents alike are looking for the best places to see the fall foliage.

On Thursday, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources released its updated Pennsylvania Fall Foliage map showing the best places to find foliage this week.

Right now, the best foliage color is in the Northern Tier, Northeastern Pennsylvania, and parts of Central Pennsylvania. Peaking foliage can be found in Tioga, Bradford, Susquehanna, Wyoming, Lackawanna, Pike Clinton, Clearfield, Somerset, and Wayne counties.

The rest of the state is between two to four months away from peak foliage, though the southern portion of the state is likely further away than the remaining counties from seeing the best color.

    • Dark Green/Little to No Change= peak is three weeks to a month away
    • Light Green/Starting to Change= peak is approximately two to three weeks away
    • Yellow/Approaching Best Color= peak is approximately one week away
    • Orange/Best Color= foliage is peaking this week
    • Red/Starting to Fade= still some nice color but won’t last more than a few more days
    • Brown/Past Peak= all or nearly all color is gone

DCNR says this week’s drop in nightly temperature has “accelerated the transition of color” and that autumn colors are “now prevalent from the northern Poconos to the central Appalachians and throughout the Allegheny Plateau.”

Pennsylvania offering new resources to enjoy fall foliage

In Tioga County, residents can check out the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon where the county’s service forester says rep maples, sugar maples, beech, and birch trees are showing their vibrant colors.

Sproul State Forest is also expected to be at peak colors this weekend ahead of the Flaming Fall Foliage Festival in Renovo.

In the southeastern portion of Pennsylvania, the leaves are just now starting to change.

Each week DCNR will release a new foliage map with updates on where to see peak foliage for the weekend.
