(WPHL) – Police say a man was attacked by a meat cleaver on a SEPTA bus.

The incident happened right outside of the police headquarters at Broad and Callowhill around 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators say a passenger exited the bus and flagged down an officer who happened to be in close proximity. Passengers alerted the officer that a man on the bus had a weapon.

That officer entered the bus, arrested a 45-year-old man, and recovered the meat cleaver.

Police say the victim, also a 45-year-old man is in stable condition and is recovering from cuts to his hand and head.

Investigators say they are not sure what led up to the attack.

They are working with SEPTA to review any possible surveillance video of the incident.
